This project consist of graphic design and initial HTML/CSS mock up for a Web App. The basic concepts of the application are simply fantastic. I really enjoyed the time spent at the startup, learning the “way of the coder” and getting my hands dirty with HTML/CSS. This was a great experience to actually implement my designs and staying in direct contact with the coded version of my Indesign layout was probably the best webdesign school ever. Getting to know the limitations and work arounds of code is simply the best thing to do when you design for the browser.

On the actual application, it is kind of a CRM, built on top of bleeding edge technologies. Here you can see some images from my mock-ups, which were pixel-perfect implemented in code.

The ICT4Gov project was the first project I worked at the World Bank Institute. I was asked to create a logo, and therefore, continue to work on whole branding for that project.
ICT4Gov focuses on helping countries to implement participation programs, such as participatory budgeting processes, surveys, etc. with the use of Information and Communications Technologies. They have programs such as SMS voting in Niger, where people were able to vote on public surveys using SMS.
The main focus on the brand concept was to enhance the “participation” aspect of the program, and translating that idea to the project logo.

Here you can see the community website, created upon the Ning Platform.

I’ve been working with the Open Contracting team, to create the brand for this new and promising project in the World Bank Institute.

The overall goal of teh project is to increase transparency on public contracting, with the disclosure of the relevant information from pre-award activities all the way through implementation, allowing a much more effective monitoring and accountability for the results. In other words, it aims to make it easier for the population to have more knowledge on how the public money is being spent. Here you can see the graphic material designed for this project.

Here is the presentation video created by the Open Contracting team.

Recently I made some major changes in my life. I changed the focus area of work as a designer from a mainly Print based professional to a Web focused designer.

I used to have a full time job and did some freelancing on the spare time, and now I’m full freelancing, with two international contracts and a great local client in the App Development field.

In this change, I struggled at some managing things that, as an employee I haven’t really cared much, since most of my work were very straight forward. Suddenly I had hundreds of scheduled and non-scheduled tasks, that I had to keep track of. Also, if I fail on any one of them it’s bad for me, since my clients will suffer on itwhich leads to less money, and the whole thing becomes a snowball of hell. It was then that during and App development meeting with my client, we were talking about a new web app that had just launched called Asana. Dustin Moskovitz was involved in this project and by my first contact with the app I noticed it wasn’t a common app.

Asana is a task manager. A complex one, yet a simple one. I used to be a fan of TeuxDeux from Swissmiss, which is a very simple task manager (with an awesome design style), but it lacked a ton of configurations I felt the need now. You can use Asana as simple task manager, just adding your tasks and keeping track of it in a list, and day-by-day you will start to create projects, insert due dates for tasks, tags, etc. After I created you own environment in the asana platform, I started to find more and more utilities for it, from personal tasks in work, to a shared project where I exchange some webdesign tips with friends and co-workers.

Asana was primarily built to be a team task manager, with lots of controls for groups and assignments, but me, as a solo freelancer, I use close to nothing in team management and I’m loving Asana. Here you can see some links to the Asana website, where they explain a lot of it’s functionalities and workflows.
It’s a really great app.

MMIA Agency in China, made a beautifully designed video for Central China Television. The idea was to remake China’s history, for that, they would use the traditional “ink-and-wash” technique, which was developed in ancient China. This technique renders a dreamlike image. To get the final effects of the video, MMIA went to the Paris/German based production company Troublemakers.tv and the german director Niko Tziopanos of weareflink. The end result is one of the most beautiful videos I’ve ever seen, bringing this ancient painting technique to life.
Click here to view the embedded video.

Recently I’ve been seening a lot of ads that focuses on a ruined actor or pseudo-celebrity to canibalize themselves in order to promote a brand or product. Here in Brazil I’ve seen two TV ads with that same concept, and today I saw this viral video with the Winklevoss Twins. I do understand that everybody needs money but isn’t this a self-humiliating thing that, in most cases, could be avoided? I don’t see anything good for FIAT to humiliate a ruined actor, that is already known countrywise for his ultra bad performance, putting him side-by-side with Dustin Hoffman. In my opinion neither FIAT nor Dustin Hoffman needed to appeal for such low concepts. I won’t judge Ricardo Macchi (the terrible actor), since he might be needind money and therefore accepting any kind of job. But I do believe that FIAT has a huge publicity budget (they paid Dustin Hoffman, afterall) and could definetely have used this money to pay an ultra high quality videodesign agency, to come up with a highly creative solution for their ad.

As for the Winklevoss twins, I doubt they would need any money, they were already rich and won 65 million from Facebook, what those guys still need? Don’t they have anything better to do with their lives? I can think of a thousand better things to do instead of doing a Pistachios Advertising. What do you guys think?

Here is an example of a highly creative, visually awesome also from FIAT, that doesn’t humiliate anyone.

Extract from Brandient’s Vimeo Page:

“UNDER THE SIGN OF THE WOLF

The world’s leading antivirus solution embraces a bold new brand identity.

Brandient armed Bitdefender with a powerful, sharp weapon: the legendary symbol of the Dacian Dragon-Wolf. Half wolf, half serpent, this totemic creature guarded the Dacian people in their wars and has come to stand for invincible defense. The modern interpretation of the ancient symbol completes the brand promise with sleekness, making the brand highly relevant to digital society while clearly asserting its Romanian roots.

Rebranding by Brandient. 3D design and production by Brandient in collaboration with Golem Studio. Motion graphics and editing by Raster Point.

Brandient strategy team: Aneta Bogdan, Madalina Diaconescu. Brandient design team: Bogdan Dumitrache, Ciprian Badalan, Cristian “Kit” Paul, Cristian Petre, Eugen Erhan, Iancu Barbarasa. ”

What an amazing logo, and branding identity as a whole. I really like when people dig deep in ancient culture to find inspiration and can bring that to an ultra modern style. The video is also a great piece of the branding, translating the whole concept of the logo to a fast paced presentation right on our firt impression. This kind of thing makes my life better.

This new can design for Diet Coke is part of the “Stay Extraordinary” campaign. The design is incredibly beautiful, although I miss a bit of traditional branding in it. Since we are talking about Coca-Cola, they are a few light-years ahead of the world when it comes to branding so I won’t judge it.
