This new can design for Diet Coke is part of the “Stay Extraordinary” campaign. The design is incredibly beautiful, although I miss a bit of traditional branding in it. Since we are talking about Coca-Cola, they are a few light-years ahead of the world when it comes to branding so I won’t judge it.

I am a great fan of Lovely Package. Today I saw 2 package designs that made me think. This Abella pack for honey. I don’t question the creativity and beauty of this design. But does it work? I’m not an expert in package design, but the honey glass bottle really looks like a perfume bottle. How much does this bottle costs in relation to the honey inside? Does it have enough honey for, let’s say, 2 weeks of breakfast for a couple?

They say…

“The products consist of 100% pure, raw, unfiltered honey created by master beekeepers using age-old techniques. Every drop is a work of art.”

My question is, can you take all this ultra special honey out of this bottle? These bottles work fine for perfume, that are a very liquid/volatile product, but honey?

What do you think about it?

Not much to explain here, right?

via swissmiss

UPDATE: Wow, I really like this kind of online discussion, and all. BrandNew made a very nice post showing how image is false. I do agree that the image is false, but I disagree that the Coca-Cola logo has changed that much, since all the logos posted are roughly alike, and the change between them are essentialy applications of the same logo.

Pepsi has drastically changed their logo 6 times over the period illustrated. Coca-Cola has done it twice, over a slighter longer period. If you look at BrandNews image, you can see that in the early 1900′s there was the first and big change in Coca-Cola logo. On that second logo, we already have a rough of the actual logo. Of course we had inumerous drawing corrections along the years, since most of those logos were created by hand, and the precision of logo crafting nowaday is something that didn’t existed 20 year ago. But the concept and main line of the logo is present since early 1900′s.

I am a designer, from deep in my soul. My father is a designer. I breathe design in my everyday life since I was 8 years old. I can’t look at anything written and not guess what font it is printed. I often find myself looking for the “Command+Z” for some shit I did in real life. I’ve been like this for 10 years now, since I started working on graphic design for real. When I was at the Design School, I was 100% creation oriented, I do think most of the good designers are like this. “Desktop men” if I am allowed to steal the expression from my father’s friend. But when a designer is out of school, you have certain responsabilities that you can’t forget. Other people trust you their money, in some business they are running ( or starting ), so you can do a good job and find a market position for that product or service and make a nice package for them too. If you can’t think about marketing positioning for a product, the product will fail, your client will waste their money, you will loose your client, and you will ultimately fail. That’s bad, very bad.

A couple of days ago, I wrote a post about the Samurai Vodka, a concept design by Arthur Schreiber. An astonishing high quality of the 3D image ( by Pavel Gubin ), that made me think if it wasn’t a real picture. The execution is masterfull. A great idea, a great bottle design, a nice label, and very nice box. Everything is awesome. But Arthur forgot about one “small” detail. Market positioning. It would be a lot easier to sell that pack design if the liquid inside the great pack was Sake. Samurais are a japanese thing. Vodka isn’t the “oficial” drink in japan. Sake is. Samurais are a very nice market appeal for japanenese people, but japanese people like Sake instead of vodka. If it wasn’t a concept, things could have gotten ugly for Arthur. I do hope he sells this package, cause it would please me a lot to see a great bottle like that on the shelves. But I’d rather drink sake from it, cause it feels more natural. At least to me.

Congratulation to both Arthur and Pavel for the great. I sincery hope that some japanese vodka producer buys your great idea, although I really think that it would be a lot easier to sell if it was a sake bottle.
